What is your company’s elevator pitch?
My Halal Kitchen is a medium for sharing recipes, food-related articles and halal industry information with a mission to provide readers with resources and product suggestions for wholesome, all-natural cooking inspiration and everyday living.
“Halal” is the Arabic word describing what is permitted or lawful and can relate to a variety of things from food, fashion, and finance. In reference to food, halal foods are those permitted within Islamic dietary guidelines, which are set out in the Qur’an, the Holy book Muslims around the globe adhere to for guidance in everyday life. My Halal Kitchen strives to show that any cuisine can be made halal by incorporating a few simple substitutions for non-halal ingredients such as pork and alcohol.
Who are your clients and what examples can you give of how you served that person or business?
My clients are the readers of my site, schools I consult on healthy lunches, students of my cooking classes, audience members of cooking demos and presentations, companies who place ads on my site and the folks who purchase my products (i.e. cookbooks, recipe app, retail products).
By providing specific brand recommendations and sources of healthy and halal foods while also training a school’s kitchen staff, I was able to provide them a five-week hands-on course that helped to transform their school lunches to include vibrant, fresh, healthy and halal ingredients that are kid-friendly and parent-approved.
What is your most successful sales strategy? What works to brings you business?
Picking up the phone and calling potential and existing clients personally has been the most effective and rewarding for my business. I’ve been able to build great relationships with my clients and sustain them by connecting with their specific needs, whether it’s for a customized cooking class or the right banner advert to place on my site.
What is the most important lesson you have learned in business that might help others?
Since I’ve entered the world of business, I’ve learned over and over again that it’s incredibly important to get good advice from people more experienced than me in both business and in life. I’ve also learned to trust my instincts and go with the decisions that feel right to me, that are aligned with my values and that are wholeheartedly my own. In that way, I don’t have any regrets and get to know my strength within- even when things don’t go as planned.
What are your Mentors’ names, and how have they helped you in your business?
Jim Meyers, Mark Lieberman and Larry Lakin have all been instrumental in helping me see the bigger picture of my business goals while teaching me how to focus on sources of revenue and prioritize the tasks that speak back to the core mission of my business. They have been encouraging and given thoughtful advice stemming from their combined years of business experience in order to help mine prosper. Gaining their mentorship has been hands down one of the best decisions for my business.
