I know that running a small business means wearing many hats. However, first and foremost, I believe you must be a non-stop advocate, champion, marketer and salesperson for the business.
That is where I spent most of my 40 years in business, creating differentiated and successful, business-to-business media brands for the restaurant/foodservice industry. I believe marketing is at the core of any business – the one function you cannot delegate or outsource – while you can always find needed help and expertise when it comes to legal, accounting, etc.
I counsel my clients to think about and clearly understand who are the potential customers they are targeting, who are their principal competitors, what meaningfully differentiates their product or service – makes it better, unique, or special – and how are they going to reach out to potential customers and tell a compelling story.
In my own career, I was inspired and motivated by the TED Talk by Simon Sinek, “Start With Why.” I try to help my SCORE clients articulate their own “why,” formulate their marketing message, write a solid business plan, and come up with financial projections that are reasonable and make sense.
This is important, not only if you are seeking outside financing for your new business venture, but also to make sure you do your due diligence and are thinking clearly about the challenges and opportunities.
