Meet Dr. Sarah Allen, owner of Dr. Sarah Allen Counseling in Northbrook, IL and Featured Business Owner at SCORE Chicago this week.  Learn about her business and what tips she has for your success.

What is your company’s elevator pitch?

As a psychologist, I help women define the changes they want to make in their lives and assist them in making the changes a reality.  I work with them in person in the Chicago area and by Skype.

Who are your clients, and give an example of how you served that person or business?

My clients are women, aged 16 to 65 years old (but mostly in their 30s and 40s) who typically feel stressed, overwhelmed and unhappy. I help them problem-solve ways of feeling more in control of their lives especially with issues relating to anxiety, depression, parenting, eating/weight issues and their relationships.

2015 Update

In the past year I have continued to grow my practice and I am finding that many more potential patients cite finding me online as the referral source. Many even schedule a first appointment without talking to me on the telephone first because they say my blog posts and website content already tell them I have experience they need.

I have written two new free booklets in the past year Simple Steps To Overcoming Anxiety & Worrying and Simple Steps To Overcome Depression. Offering helpful information for free allows potential clients to see that I am an expert in the field. Lastly, I have added a mobile website and learned how to target Facebook posts to reach my target audience. Both of these have increased my online presence.

Building a very professional looking website that has booklets on the most frequent issues that come up in therapy. Potential clients can download the booklets for free and they show clients that I have the knowledge and experience to help them.

What is the most important lesson you have learned in business that might help others?

Set boundaries about what you can and can’t do. You can’t have expertise in everything. I have several areas that I have spent 20 years learning about in depth. The best therapy happens when my experience and expertise is a good fit for what my clients need.

Mentor name, and how they have helped you in your business?

Peg Corwin – has helped me make my website more appealing. She has also helped me improve the SEO of the site which will help potential clients find me and taught me more social media techniques.

Mark Lieberman – has helped me understand the marketing process better and identify who my ideal client is. His suggestion of doing a local library workshop led to me to do a successful presentation at Northbrook library and to plan to do some more in surrounding towns.
