What do you do?

We do environmental consulting, regulatory compliance, environmental permitting, asbestos, and lead testing, abatement management, phase I & II ESA, remediation and re-development, and waste materials disposal.

What inspired you to start your business?

I had been looking for a new career opportunity for some time and concluded that the best opportunity for me involved relocating. So, not wanting to relocate my family, and identifying the need for an environmental consulting firm in Beloit, Wisconsin, and the state line area, I decided to create my own firm.

What's special about your business?

Brownfield Environmental Engineering Resources is founded on the principle of “A Common-Sense Approach to Environmental Consulting”.

What have been the high and low points of being a business owner?

Forming our team of environmental professionals has been a huge source of satisfaction for me. I'm extremely proud of our staff and look forward to helping them grow in their careers. Being a business owner certainly has its challenges, such as working long hours and being at your desk when it's nice outside.

What is your relationship with SCORE? SCORE client What influenced you to seek help from SCORE?

Brownfield Environmental Engineering Resources is part of the Irontek community in Beloit, Wisconsin where SCORE mentoring is available. I definitely needed help getting our financials set up to properly manage the financial side of the business. My SCORE mentors have been more valuable than I ever imagined as we continue to tweak our financial reports and expand financial planning as our company grows.

How SCORE helped.

Having our financials in order has allowed us to identify what areas of the business are most profitable, and where we need to maximize our efforts for profitability and balance.

What's great about my mentor?

My SCORE mentors have become like my board of directors.  We meet regularly to review current financials, business planning, and the overall health of the business. They have helped us develop and implement regular procedures for managing cash flow, AR/AP, and business trends. Without regular SCORE meetings, it would be way too easy to get bogged down in the daily grind and not focus on the big financial picture.

What advice would you give to someone thinking of starting a small business?

Do lots of advanced planning and don't be afraid to fail.

What have you learned from your experiences as a business owner?

Surround yourself with good people and treat them as you would like to be treated!
